New life for the oldest building in the Cornish village

A Port Isaac based business woman has breathed new life into the oldest building in the Cornish village to create modern rental accommodation in a prime location.
Emily Scott, owner of The Harbour Restaurant, based at the top of the slipway, has renovated the first floor of the 15th century building, transforming the former fisherman’s cottages into a stylish two bedroom apartment.

From the end of July, holidaymakers will be able to rent out ‘The Harbour Loft’ and enjoy panoramic views of the harbour, and unbridled access to entertainment from local musicians.
Emily Scott, who has owned the historic building since 2007, says: “We’re really fortunate to be in a prime position in the heart of Port Isaac and we can’t wait to welcome guests to the refurbished property.”
Emily has lived and worked in Port Isaac since 1999 and completely renovated and redecorated the flat to make the most of its harbourside location. She says: “The bathroom was at the front of the house with the best view, so we moved this around and put a brand new kitchen and living space in there instead.
“We’re based right in the centre of Port Isaac and you certainly wouldn’t have far to walk. We are also going to offer a delivery service meaning you can create your own restaurant in your front room.”
And having styled and designed both the interiors of the ground floor restaurant and the accommodation above it, Emily admits it reflects her personality.
“The styling is similar in both the restaurant and accommodation. I think the holiday cottage ties in well with the restaurant; I’ve tried to make both light and airy. I wanted the styling to feel relaxed and reflect the seaside location.”
“I’ve really tried to keep the character of the building. It’s over 500 years old and I think the uneven floors and walls are to be cherished, not changed.”
While the atmosphere inside the building is relaxed, outside the summer atmosphere is one of music and excitement: “There’s a brilliant atmosphere here in the summer in Port Isaac.
The window looks out right onto The Platt so you receive an unrivalled view of the brilliant St Breward Silver Band on a Thursday night and the famous Fisherman’s Friends on a Friday evening.”
The Harbour Loft has also been designed to offer flexibility to guests and cater for families, couples, and small groups of friends. The accommodation sleeps up to five people arranged over a master bedroom with double bed and a twin bedroom with two single beds. There is also a day bed in the sitting room suitable for a small child.
